Overview

Recreation Class offerings are non-credit classes provided by Stanford Recreation. The goal of the Recreation Class Program is to provide participants with professional instruction in a safe and fun workout and learning environment.

Running

No matter where you are in your running career we will work on goal setting and improving running efficiency and overall performance. One day a week will be speed work at the track. The other day will be to hone in on pacing and to get a feel for the road/trail. Special attention to running form, working smarter not harder and how to best prevent injury is integrated into each workout. The focus is on fun and overall wellness.

Tennis

Tennis classes will cover rules, technique, and general play. Learn and develop skills by playing with other participants of similar skill level.

Beginning: This course will focus on teaching the following skills: Forehand, backhand, serve, and net play; rules and scoring

Intermediate: This course is designed to review the fundamental strokes and their use in a game situation along with singles and doubles tactics. Prerequisite: average ability in fundamental strokes, and regular playing experience; NTRP rating of 3.0 or equivalent.

Advanced: This course focuses on drills that emphasize footwork, serve and return, approach shots, volleys, lobs, and overheads. Student will also learn strategies for competition in singles and doubles. Prerequisite: above average strokes and game playing ability; NTRP equivalent rating of 4.0 or above.

Note: Non-marking tennis shoes are required for class.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own racquets. There will be a few available to borrow.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga will be taught in the Mysore style by Russell Case, authorized Level II Instructor by Pattabhi Jois and the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore India. Mysore is a guided self practice. This is a personal teaching style designed for your background in yoga. All skill levels are welcome and this is an open studio and available for participants to drop in at their convenience between 11am- 1pm.

Pre & Post-Natal Fitness Program

Motherhood is a huge life transition! Our experienced instructors create a safe, supportive, nurturing environment to empower women through this transformative experience while also providing the opportunity to connect with other mothers. The pace of our classes accommodate the needs of all pre and post-natal mothers. Quarterly program fee allows access to both classes.

Olympic Weightlifting (Beginning/Intermediate)

This class will help develop the skills and strength necessary to perform the Olympic Lift (snatch & clean and jerk). Appropriate for beginners looking for first-time instruction, as well intermediate lifters looking to improve their foundations with hands-on coaching and progressions of the Olympic Lifts. The class will also include progressive programming to improve strength specific to the Olympic Lifts and will span 8 weeks.

Gymnastics

Learn the basic fundamentals of Gymnastics. This class will introduce participants to all gymnastics apparatus; Floor Exercise, Vault, High Bar, Uneven Bars, Trampoline, Rings, Tumble Track, Pommel Horse, Balance Beam and Parallel Bars. Instruction will include flexibility, strength, tumbling basics, fundamental on all apparatus and basic spotting. Prerequisites: Willingness to work hard at things that may be scary or difficult and that require some strength and flexibility. No prior gymnastics experience is required.

Badminton

Basketball Skills: Although this course is designed for players of intermediate to advanced skill level, it is open to anyone hoping to improve as a player.

The focus will be placed on individual skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, defending, and post play. Team offensive and defensive principles will be taught through intra-class competition.

Climbing

This course is designed to give beginners an introduction to indoor rock climbing. No prior rock climbing experience or knowledge is required. Topics covered include belaying skills (properly using the top-rope safety system), bouldering & spotting technique, climbing grade scales, types of handholds, and basic footwork.

BeWell Registration Instructions

Verifying the SHALA to receive the BeWell rate doesn’t happen automatically. When you go through the registration process, you will get to the payment page (5th and final step of the registration process). At the top of the payment page, there is a section where it will verify that you have taken your SHALA with your SUID and SUNet ID.

You need to press the green button to verify your eligibility.

If you have taken your SHALA this calendar year, the discount will show the class price for the BeWell rate. Your SUID and SUNetID will automatically populate- you just need to press the green button.

How do I get my BeWell berry (for eligible staff and faculty)?

BeWell berries will be applied at the end of each quarter (please allow 2-3 weeks for it to show up in your BeWell account). If you have questions about berries, please contact bewell@stanford.edu.

Eligibility

Stanford students, Faculty/Staff and Stanford Community are eligible to participate in the Group Fitness Program. Stanford Community members are Dependents 18 and older, Spouses, Hospital Employees who have purchased an Athletic Access Card, Alums who have purchased an Alumni Membership, Retirees, or Partners of a Student, Faculty or Staff.
