Beginning I

This class is for first time swimmers and for individuals who have fear, anxiety or discomfort in water. This class is also designed for individuals who have previously taken beginning swim courses and have had little/no success or who struggle to move through water.  The goal is for a swimmer to become comfortable and in control in both shallow and deep water. The fundamental skills learned in this course will provide a foundation for learning stroke technique, such as freestyle, in an effortless manner.

Prerequisites

non-swimmer, unable to swim across a 25 yard pool.

Beginning II

In this class you will learn how to relax in the water, breath effectively, float and tread, swim 3 different strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke), jump in the water from the deck, use swimming equipment (kickboards, pull buoys, fins) and swim across a 25 yard pool. If you have fear or anxiety in the water, consider taking the Beginning I class.

Prerequisites

Non-swimmer, unable to swim across a 25 yard pool.

Goals

Learn to be safe and relaxed in shallow and deep water. Develop ease and efficiency with breathing & swimming strokes. Be safe and comfortable swimming 25 yards continuously.

Intermediate

This class is for those who can swim across a 25 yard pool. In this class you will learn how to: breathe effectively, tread water, dive in from the edge and use swimming equipment (kick boards, pull buoys, hand paddles, fins). You will be introduced to and gain further development of the 4 competitive swimming strokes (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke & Butterfly). An introduction to flip turns and intervals (50 yard repeats) will be taught. Underwater videotaping and stroke review and analysis will occur.

Prerequisites

Ability to swim across a 25 yard pool continuously. You MUST be comfortable in deep water, if you are uncomfortable in deep water please take Swimming: Beginning II.

Goals

Develop relaxed, efficient and refined swim strokes, and begin to learn how to use swimming as a form of fitness (i.e. lap swimming, triathlons, masters swimming, open water swims). Evolve to swim 500 - 1,000 yards per class.

Stroke Refinement

Review and fine tune the 4 competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke), with a primary emphasis on improving freestyle stroke efficiency. Flipturn refinement. Drill and technique work will be heavily emphasized. On average, 1000 yards will be swum per class.

 

Prerequisites

Ability to tread deep water for 5 minutes, swim 100 yard intervals of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke with rhythmic breathing, and swim 200 yards continuously under 4 minutes.

Swim Conditioning

This class is for those who are capable of swimming 100 yard intervals in the 4 competitive strokes. On average, 1500 yards will be swum per class. In this class you will improve your cardiovascular endurance through directed workouts consisting of both distance and sprint swimming. Corrections to technique will be given as needed.

Prerequisites

Ability to swim 100 yards continuously of both freestyle and backstroke. Comfort with breaststroke and butterfly beneficial, but not required.

Goals

Execution of 100 yard interval sets with flipturns incorporating the 4 competitive strokes. Reach personal swimming fitness goals. Evolve to swimming 1500-2000 yards per class.

For this quarter, this class is participating in the Group Fitness Pass system. As a result, you are able to pay a flat fee to take unlimited select classes this quarter.

Lifeguard

This course trains entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Certification includes the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, & CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Prerequisites: 15 years old (by the last day of class), ability to swim 300 yards continuously using the front crawl and breaststroke, ability to surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object within one minute and 40 seconds, and tread water for two minutes without use of hands. This course requires a minimum of 6 participants and attendance at all classes is mandatory.

BeWell Registration Instructions

Verifying the SHALA to receive the BeWell rate doesn’t happen automatically. When you go through the registration process, you will get to the payment page (5th and final step of the registration process). At the top of the payment page, there is a section where it will verify that you have taken your SHALA with your SUID and SUNet ID.

You need to press the green button to verify your eligibility.

If you have taken your SHALA this calendar year, the discount will show the class price for the BeWell rate. Your SUID and SUNetID will automatically populate- you just need to press the green button.

How Do I Get My BeWell Discount?

**BeWell note: To be eligible for the BeWell rate, benefits-eligible employees must complete the Stanford Health and Lifestyle Assessment (SHALA). If you have specific questions about the BeWell program or want to participate please go to bewell.stanford.edu. As a BeWell eligible employee, please note you are eligible for 2 classes per quarter at the BeWell rate.
